Isla Contoy & Isla Mujeres are two small Mexican islands located in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Yucatán.
Isla Contoy is uninhabited due to the lack of fresh water and is home to more than 150 different species of birds, including: Pelicans, frigatebirds and cormorants. The island's dream beaches are breeding grounds for sea turtles and in 1961 the Mexican government declared the island a national park.
Isla Mujeres , the women's island, is more developed for tourism, but still worth a visit! The shady alleys are perfect for a short stroll around the island, where golf carts are the preferred form of transportation.

Isla Contoy
A small visitor zone has been set up on the island, which is inaccessible to mass tourism. There are two paths where you can experience the breathtaking world of Contoy up close during the day.
Contoy is actually an island uninhabited by humans and has only been partially made accessible to tourism. The untouched nature has a special attraction for visitors.
Only occasionally are selected biologists allowed to stay on the island for several weeks at a time for research purposes.
The excursion goes like this:
It starts very early. At around 7:00 a.m. you will be picked up by your guide in the minibus and taken to Cancun, near the port. After a light breakfast, we continue by motorboat to Isla Contoy, which is located in a nature reserve about 1 hour north of Cancun.
The only buildings on the island are a lighthouse and a small museum dedicated to the local flora and fauna. A maximum of 100 visitors are allowed on the island every day, in small groups and at different times, for around 3 hours each.
Once there, you will find out exciting information about this (almost) untouched piece of earth during a short tour of Contoy's sandy paths. There will be fish and other grilled delicacies for lunch and of course you will also have time to explore the island's beautiful beaches, which are reminiscent of postcard motifs. You can often see starfish, large mussels or rays in the shallow water of the protected nature park.
After everyone is back on board, the captain will take you to one of the many coral reefs that are in the area and if you want, you will be equipped with a diving mask, snorkel and fins and can take a close look at the impressive underwater world of Mexico or just something go swimming.
At the end of the tour you will have the opportunity to get an impression of the much more touristy "Isla Mujeres", perhaps go for an ice cream or simply take a walk through the colorful, narrow streets of the island center before returning to the island center Boat to Cancun and from there back to your accommodation.
